As a combat veteran and retired law enforcement officer, I have faced the struggles of PTSD from two distinct but equally demanding careers. The transition from the battlefield and the streets back into civilian life is challenging, and the weight of those experiences can often feel unbearable. However, I have found that physical exercise, community, and CrossFit Fargo have been vital in maintaining my mental and emotional well-being. These elements provide the structure, discipline, and support system necessary to continue the fight against PTSD.
Physical exercise has always been a cornerstone of both military and law enforcement training. It is not just about maintaining fitness; it is about survival—both physically and mentally. The intensity of a good workout provides an outlet for the built-up stress and anxiety that PTSD brings. Pushing my body to its limits quiets the chaos in my mind, allowing me to focus on the present moment. The endorphins released during exercise help to lift my mood and reduce stress. Maintaining physical fitness is not just about the body; it’s about nurturing the mind and spirit as well. Exercise helps me regain control, proving to myself that I am still strong and capable despite the battles I have fought.
Community is another critical component of healing. In the military and law enforcement, I relied on my brothers and sisters to have my back in life-or-death situations. Losing that sense of brotherhood can be one of the hardest aspects of transitioning into civilian life. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who understand my struggles has been essential. Whether it is through a conversation over coffee at the front desk, Hero WODs, or simply knowing that someone is there, this community provides the support needed to face the daily battles of PTSD.

John will be leading up a RUCKING effort this coming AUGUST 9th to both raise funds to support the BRADY OBERG LEGACY FOUNDATION in their effort to create more awareness about PTSD and Veterans suicide and opportunities for them to engage in community that supports the fight they are in daily.
One of the opportunities that BOLF provides is a scholarship for Veterans to take part and have a full unlimited membership at CrossFit Fargo at a reduced cost. They have a class specific for Veterans to train together to build that community of support and growth that helps them to take the fight to PTSD.

Event Details:
This year’s Remembrance Ruck will be led by the original team — John, Trent, Jeremy, and Ryan — each guiding a group through 10-mile legs of the route. Our march will begin at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead, heading north on 34th Street to Highway 10, then east to Highway 9, continuing north to Felton, and east on County Road 34 to the Veterans Memorial in Ulen.
From the Memorial, all four teams will come together to ruck the final mile as one, ending at the cemetery for a short ceremony in Brady’s honor.
You don’t have to ruck the full 10 miles. Whether you do 10, 5, or just 2 miles — whether you ruck, wear a weighted vest, or simply walk — your participation matters. The goal is to show up and raise awareness for combat-induced PTSD and to help eliminate veteran suicide.
If you would like to take part in this year’s ruck, please reach out to one of the team leads below:
- John Dalziel – [email protected]
- Trent Dawson – [email protected]
- Jeremy Donais – [email protected]
- Ryan Daniel – [email protected]
Additional details will be shared as we get closer to the event—both via email and on our Facebook page at BradyOberg RuckMarch.
Your presence would mean a lot as we ruck in remembrance to raise awareness of combat-related PTSD, and continue the mission Brady inspired.
